(SAMOA)–Vaiola College tops the list of 10 schools on the big island of Savai'i recognized by the nation's education and sports ministry for their participation in the XVI Pacific Games Adopt-A-Country 'School Environment' competition.

Of those 10 participating schools, Vaiola, operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is the only secondary school from Savai'i listed among the awardees in the School Environment category.

Vaiola adopted the Solomon Islands and declared: "We are proud Solomons from Samoa!"

The school's Principal Brother Mika Lolo, accepted their gifts sponsored by Samoa Stationery & Books (SSAB) from the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Labour (MCIL) Lautafi Selafi Purcell. Lautafi is also the Minister of Public Enterprise (MPE).

Minister of Education, Sports & Culture (MESC) Loau Keneti Sio expressed his sincere gratitude to all schools that participated; villages and Church leaders, each school committee and all parents for their incredible support of the Adopt-A-Country Programme.

In the programme, schools adopted a country. A total of 24 sports teams representing their countries in the 2019 Pacific Games were welcomed and celebrated by their adoptive schools.

Students decorated their campuses accordingly, learned the national anthems, songs and dances of their adopted countries including each nation's histories, their traditions of customing and other arts. Students also participated in the opening and closing ceremonies.

They created cheers, posters for their adopted nations and much of the colorful festivities were captured on video and published online. Schools also participated in the Pacific Games Torch Relay that began at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Mulivai and then went straight to Savai'i; came back and traveled around Upolu and lit the Pacific Games Flame Cauldron on opening night 7 July, 2019.

Schools were listed in three categories for the Adopt-A-Country Programme competitions: School Environment, Cheers and Poster.

Administrators were thanked by the Samoa government and Pacific Games Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Falefata Hele Matatia during a ceremony held Friday, 16 August at the Ekalesia Faapotopotoga Kerisiano Samoa (EFKS) in Sogi.

Some 60 plus secondary and primary schools, 30 from Savai'i and 30 from Upolu, were represented at the awards ceremony.
